When your ballot gets counted

Election Day is 53 days away. When it comes, results in some states will take days and that will be normal, not a sign that something is wrong. This page explains why, state by state, before anyone has a reason to argue about it.

This is a counting tracker, not a results tracker. We don't publish vote totals or projections, and nothing here says who is ahead.

Why some states are slow, and it isn't suspicious

A mail ballot has to be checked before it can be counted: signature verified, envelope opened, ballot separated from the envelope so the vote stays secret. States differ on when election officials may start that work. 16 states let officials begin before Election Day. Those states usually report most results the same night. 35 do not, so their staff begin the entire process on Election Day morning and finish days later. Pennsylvania is the best-known example: it cannot open a single mail ballot until 7 a.m. on Election Day.

A slow count is a state following its own law. A fast count is a state that gave itself a head start. Neither tells you anything about the result.

If your ballot gets flagged

This is the part that matters to you personally. A ballot rejected for a signature problem can often still be fixed, but only inside a short window, and only if you find out. Research on Pennsylvania's 2024 election found voters told about a defect before Election Day were 25 percentage points more likely to have their vote counted.

So: track your ballot, and if it shows a problem, act the same day. The deadline column above is how long you have. Twelve states and D.C. have no statewide process at all, which is why the envelope has to be right the first time.
