Voting by mail in Tennessee

Only with a qualifying reason. You need an approved reason, such as travel, illness or disability, age, or work. Check your state's list. If you don't qualify, early in-person voting is usually an option. Voters 60 and older qualify automatically; so do students outside their county, caretakers, CDL/TWIC holders working away, and more. The application needs your full Social Security number and date of birth, and an incomplete one is mailed back. Returned ballots must go by mail; no hand delivery. Ballots are available 45 days before Election Day. Once you request an absentee ballot you can't vote in person that election except by provisional ballot.

Return ruleReceived by the county election commission by close of polls on Election Day, by mail or courier ONLY. Tennessee does not allow hand delivery or drop boxes for absentee ballots.
Missed the request deadline?Voters hospitalized in their county of residence within 20 days of the election who will be unable to vote in person on Election Day (emergency absentee ballot via a county 'emergency registrar'; hospital administrator may be appointed emergency registrar): by Tue, Nov 3, opening of the polls on Election Day.
Who can return it for youYou must return it yourself, with narrow exceptions. Absentee ballots must be returned by mail (USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc.) to the county election commission; hand delivery by anyone, handing to a poll worker, and drop boxes are not permitted. The official pages say nothing about a relative/agent placing the envelope in the mail; the only non-mail return is the emergency-registrar (hospital) path above.

Steps

  1. Check the excuse list on your state's site. Common ones: away on Election Day, illness or disability, 65 or older, work hours.
  2. If you qualify, request now and include the reason exactly as the form asks.
  3. If you don't qualify, look up early in-person voting. It's available in most excuse states.
  4. When your ballot arrives, fill it out in blue or black ink and sign the envelope.
  5. Return it the way your state requires and track it until it shows received.

Don't get rejected

  • Your absentee request must include your full Social Security number, date of birth, and the reason you qualify (with a CDL/TWIC copy if that's the reason), or it gets mailed back for correction.
  • Sign the envelope the way you signed your voter registration or driver's license. Your state compares them.
  • Use the secrecy sleeve if one is included, then the return envelope. Don't tape anything.
  • Keep the phone and email on your registration current. If there's a problem, that's how they reach you to fix it.
