Voting by mail in Oklahoma

Yes. Anyone can request a mail ballot. Any registered voter can request a mail (absentee) ballot, no reason needed. There's a deadline, so request early. Your affidavit must be notarized; by law notaries can't charge for it, and many banks and libraries do it free.

Key dates

ID at the pollsID requested (photo not necessary). Without one: Provisional ballot after signing a sworn affidavit; the county board investigates the affidavit information after Election Day and approves or rejects it - no return trip with ID required.
Return ruleMailed ballots received by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Hand-delivered ballots must reach the County Election Board by close of business Nov. 2, the Monday before.
Missed the request deadline?Voters who become physically incapacitated (hospitalization, childbirth) after 5 p.m. Oct. 19: by Tue, Nov 3, 7 p.m. (voted ballot received).
Who can return it for youYou must return it yourself, with narrow exceptions. Only you may return your voted absentee ballot; returning someone else's is 'ballot harvesting' (a crime). Exceptions: your spouse may mail it with your consent; the agent for an emergency-incapacitated voter; the bipartisan Absentee Voting Board for nursing-home voters. No drop boxes.

Steps

  1. Request your ballot now. Don't wait for the deadline.
  2. Confirm your registration and mailing address while you're at it.
  3. When it arrives, fill it out in blue or black ink and sign the envelope.
  4. Return it by drop box or in person if you can. Mail it at least a week early if not.
  5. Track it on your state's tracker until it shows received.

Don't get rejected

  • Extra step in your state: a notary must sign the affidavit; notaries can't charge for it. This is the #1 reason ballots get tossed where it applies.
  • Sign the envelope. An unsigned envelope is the most common fixable mistake.
  • Use the secrecy sleeve if one is included, then the return envelope. Don't tape anything.
  • Keep the phone and email on your registration current. If there's a problem, that's how they reach you to fix it.
