Can I vote by mail in my state?

Eight states plus D.C. mail every registered voter a ballot automatically. Twenty-nine states let any voter request a mail ballot with no excuse. When is the deadline to request a mail ballot for the November 3, 2026 election?

It varies by state, from three weeks before Election Day to the day before. Most fall between October 19 and October 30, 2026. Request deadlines are 'received by,' not postmarked.

Did the federal government ban mail-in voting?

No. Whether you can vote by mail is set by your state. A 2026 executive order changed how the Postal Service handles mail ballots and is being litigated. Request early and return by drop box or in person where available.

Voting by mail in Ohio

Yes. Anyone can request a mail ballot. Any registered voter can request a mail (absentee) ballot, no reason needed. There's a deadline, so request early. Mailed ballots must ARRIVE by 7:30 p.m. on Election Day; there is no postmark grace period. Ballots go out Oct. 6. The state mailed every registered voter a request form around Labor Day. Ohio bars anyone from returning another voter's ballot except in narrow cases, so plan to return your own. A separate request is needed for each election, and you must fill out the form yourself unless a disability, illiteracy, or blindness prevents it. Hospitalised by an accident or medical emergency, or your minor child is? You can still apply for an absentee ballot until 3 p.m. on Election Day.

ID at the polls	Photo ID required. Without one: Provisional ballot; to count, the voter must appear at the board of elections and provide photo ID within four days after Election Day (religious objectors may complete an affidavit instead).

Missed the request deadline?	Voters (or parents of a minor child) confined in a hospital by an accident or unforeseeable medical emergency: by Tue, Nov 3, 3 p.m..
Who can return it for you	Only certain people may return it for you. Mail it, deliver it yourself to the board office, or have one of these relatives deliver it: spouse, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, sibling, child, adopting parent, adopted child, stepparent, stepchild, uncle, aunt, nephew or niece. No one else, no other way, nowhere else. The board may keep one secure receptacle outside its office for ballots returned this way. No numeric limit.

Steps

Request your ballot now. Don't wait for the deadline.
Confirm your registration and mailing address while you're at it.
When it arrives, fill it out in blue or black ink and sign the envelope.
Return it by drop box or in person if you can. Mail it at least a week early if not.
Track it on your state's tracker until it shows received.

Don't get rejected

Pick ONE ID option on the request form: Ohio driver license/state ID number, last four of your SSN, or a photocopy of another accepted photo ID (front and back). The same number goes on the return envelope; Ohio checks ID and signature twice. Return your own ballot: Ohio bars others from returning it for you except in narrow cases.
Sign the envelope the way you signed your voter registration or driver's license. Your state compares them.
Use the secrecy sleeve if one is included, then the return envelope. Don't tape anything.
Keep the phone and email on your registration current. If there's a problem, that's how they reach you to fix it.
