Eight states plus D.C. mail every registered voter a ballot automatically. Twenty-nine states let any voter request a mail ballot with no excuse. It varies by state, from three weeks before Election Day to the day before. Most fall between October 19 and October 30, 2026. Request deadlines are 'received by,' not postmarked.

Voting by mail in Nebraska

Yes. Anyone can request a mail ballot. Any registered voter can request a mail (absentee) ballot, no reason needed. There's a deadline, so request early.

ID at the polls	Photo ID required. Without one: Voter may go home and return with ID before polls close, or vote provisionally and present acceptable photo ID in person at the county election office on or before the Tuesday following the election. A voter with a 'reasonable impediment' (disability/illness, no birth certificate, religious objection) can sign a Reasonable Impediment Certification and vote a provisional ballot that counts if complete and the signature matches.
Return rule	Must be received by close of polls on Election Day: 8 p.m. Central, 7 p.m. Mountain. By mail, in person, by an agent, or in a secure drop box.
Missed the request deadline?	Any voter who appoints an agent to request and pick up the ballot (the state lists hospitalization and medical conditions as typical reasons): by Tue, Nov 3, one hour before polls close (agent pick-up); voted ballot by close of polls.
Who can return it for you	Anyone you choose may return it. The return envelope may be mailed, or returned by personal delivery, an agent or a courier to the county office or a drop box. Candidates and campaign staff may act as agents only for family. No stated limit on returning (agents who request or pick up ballots are limited to two voters).

Steps

Request your ballot now. Don't wait for the deadline.
Confirm your registration and mailing address while you're at it.
When it arrives, fill it out in blue or black ink and sign the envelope.
Return it by drop box or in person if you can. Mail it at least a week early if not.
Track it on your state's tracker until it shows received.

Don't get rejected

Your early-voting application must include your Nebraska driver's license/state ID number or a photocopy of acceptable photo ID (or a reasonable-impediment certification).
Sign the envelope the way you signed your voter registration or driver's license. Your state compares them.
Use the secrecy sleeve if one is included, then the return envelope. Don't tape anything.
Keep the phone and email on your registration current. If there's a problem, that's how they reach you to fix it.
