Can I vote by mail in my state?

Eight states plus D.C. mail every registered voter a ballot automatically. Twenty-nine states let any voter request a mail ballot with no excuse. When is the deadline to request a mail ballot for the November 3, 2026 election?

It varies by state, from three weeks before Election Day to the day before. Most fall between October 19 and October 30, 2026. Request deadlines are 'received by,' not postmarked.

Did the federal government ban mail-in voting?

No. Whether you can vote by mail is set by your state. A 2026 executive order changed how the Postal Service handles mail ballots and is being litigated. Request early and return by drop box or in person where available.

Voting by mail in Louisiana

Only with a qualifying reason. You need an approved reason, such as travel, illness or disability, age, or work. Check your state's list. If you don't qualify, early in-person voting is usually an option. Your ballot must reach the registrar by Nov. 2, the day BEFORE Election Day, so there's no mailing it on Election Day. Voters 65+ can enroll once and get a ballot for every election for four years. Moved more than 100 miles from your old parish seat after the books closed? You qualify too.

ID at the polls	Photo ID requested. Without one: Vote by affidavit after correctly answering identifying information (name, address, DOB); ballot counts, subject to challenge, no follow-up trip.
Return rule	The registrar must RECEIVE your voted ballot by Nov. 2, the day before Election Day. There is no Election Day mail return, so send it early or bring it in.
Fix a flagged ballot by	Mon, Nov 2
Missed the request deadline?	Voter hospitalized (or expecting to be hospitalized on Election Day, or restricted to bed by a physician during early voting and Election Day) who submits physician/hospital documentation: by Mon, Nov 2, 4:30 p.m..
Who can return it for you	Anyone you choose may return it. Ballot may be returned by mail, commercial courier, fax (with waiver) or hand delivery to the registrar's office/branch or an early-voting site. Someone other than the voter may hand-deliver it but must sign a statement certifying the voter's authorization; no one except an immediate family member may submit or send more than ONE marked ballot per election. Louisiana has no drop boxes.

Steps

Check the excuse list on your state's site. Common ones: away on Election Day, illness or disability, 65 or older, work hours.
If you qualify, request now and include the reason exactly as the form asks.
If you don't qualify, look up early in-person voting. It's available in most excuse states.
When your ballot arrives, fill it out in blue or black ink and sign the envelope.
Return it the way your state requires and track it until it shows received.

Don't get rejected

Extra step in your state: a witness must sign the envelope (the form also asks for their printed name and address, but since Aug. 1, 2026 a missing printed name or address is not a defect that can be challenged or needs curing: Act 7 of 2026), and you must write your mother's maiden name (or "unknown") in Section B. This is the #1 reason ballots get tossed where it applies.
Sign the envelope. An unsigned envelope is the most common fixable mistake.
Use the secrecy sleeve if one is included, then the return envelope. Don't tape anything.
Keep the phone and email on your registration current. If there's a problem, that's how they reach you to fix it.
