Who can return it for youOnly certain people may return it for you. Only the voter, a member of the voter's household, an immediate family member (within 4th degree of kinship/marriage), the special precinct officers, or (for a voter unable to return it because of blindness/physical disability) a designated 'delivery agent' may return the ballot. Household/family may mail it, hand it to the auditor, or use the county's single drop box, within 72 hours of getting it from the voter or by close of polls, whichever is earlier. A delivery agent must be a registered Iowa voter, not the voter's employer/union/party/candidate agent, may return no more than 2 ballots per election, must deliver in person to the auditor's office with ID and a signed form, and may NOT use mail or a drop box.

Steps

  1. Request your ballot now. Don't wait for the deadline.
  2. Confirm your registration and mailing address while you're at it.
  3. When it arrives, fill it out in blue or black ink and sign the envelope.
  4. Return it by drop box or in person if you can. Mail it at least a week early if not.
  5. Track it on your state's tracker until it shows received.

Don't get rejected

  • Sign the envelope the way you signed your voter registration or driver's license. Your state compares them.
  • Use the secrecy sleeve if one is included, then the return envelope. Don't tape anything.
  • Keep the phone and email on your registration current. If there's a problem, that's how they reach you to fix it.
