Voting by mail in Alaska
Yes. Anyone can request a mail ballot. Any registered voter can request a mail (absentee) ballot, no reason needed. There's a deadline, so request early. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day. Ask the postal clerk to hand-cancel the envelope so the postmark is clear.
Key dates
| Register to vote by | Sun, Oct 4 |
| Mail ballot request received by | Sat, Oct 24 |
| Early in-person voting | Mon, Oct 19 – Tue, Nov 3 |
| Mail your ballot by | Tue, Oct 27 (USPS: allow 7 days) |
| Election Day | Tue, Nov 3 |
| ID at the polls | ID requested (photo not necessary). Without one: Vote a questioned ballot (envelope with name, address, DOB, one identifier such as SSN/DL number, signed oath); a bipartisan review board verifies eligibility after Election Day and counts it. No return trip. ID can be waived if the election official personally knows you, except voters flagged 'Must Show ID'. |
| Return rule | Postmarked by Election Day and received within 10 days after. |
| Missed the request deadline? | Voters who can't get to the polls because of age, illness or disability (special needs voting): by Tue, Nov 3, 8 p.m. (voted ballot back at a voting location). |
| Who can return it for you | The official source doesn't say whether someone else may carry it; ask your county. The Division of Elections says the voter mails the ballot (postmarked by Election Day) or returns it to a voting location by 8 p.m.; neither the page nor AS 15.20.081 says whether someone else may carry it. Only the special-needs program names a returner. |
Steps
- Request your ballot now. Don't wait for the deadline.
- Confirm your registration and mailing address while you're at it.
- When it arrives, fill it out in blue or black ink and sign the envelope.
- Return it by drop box or in person if you can. Mail it at least a week early if not.
- Track it on your state's tracker until it shows received.
Don't get rejected
- Extra step in your state: one witness (18+) or a notary must sign the envelope. This is the #1 reason ballots get tossed where it applies.
- Sign the envelope. An unsigned envelope is the most common fixable mistake.
- Use the secrecy sleeve if one is included, then the return envelope. Don't tape anything.
- Your state goes by the postmark. Automated postmarks can lag a day, so hand it to a clerk at the post office counter and ask for a manual postmark (free).
